The verb “to be” is one of the most important verbs in English. We use it to talk about who we are and where we are from. With "I", we use “AM”. With "you", we use “ARE.” In positive sentences, we usually use the short forms: “I’m” and “you’re.” For example: “I'm from Spain.” or “You’re Spanish.” In negative sentences, we add “not” after "AM” and “ARE.” With "I", we say “I’m not.” or "I am not". For example: “I’m not from Spain.” With "you", we say “you aren’t” or “you’re not.” For example: “You aren’t Spanish.”

In questions, we start with “AM” or “ARE.” For example, “Am I from Germany?” or “Are you German?” For short positive answers, we say “Yes, I am.” or “Yes, you are.” For short negative answers, we say “No, I’m not,” “No, you aren’t,” or “No, you’re not.”
